Core Value 1 - The faculty are dedicated to providing excellence in Health Professions education so that DPT graduates will demonstrate the scientific knowledge and skill in the examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, interventions, outcomes assessment and instruction of persons of all ages with movement disorders.
- Goal 1.1 DPT graduates will demonstrate skills in clinical documentation and professional communication.
- Stgy 1.1.1. Continue the integration of clinical documentation skills into cases.
- Goal 1.2 DPT graduates will demonstrate an orientation toward health and wellness and the skills required for the development of programs for the prevention of disease, injuries, and disabilities.
- Stgy 1.2.1. Incorporate wellness and injury prevention in case discussions.
- Stgy 1.2.2. Expand the discussion of health promotion, fitness and injury prevention activities for the general population throughout the lifespan.
- Goal 1.3 DPT graduates will be independent, critical thinkers and clinical problem solvers.
- Stgy 1.3.1. Continue teaching courses with an emphasis on clinical reasoning.
- Stgy 1.3.2. Continue the emphasis on the use of evidence in clinical decision-making.
- Goal 1.4 DPT graduates will be effective team members and assume leadership positions in the health care delivery system.
- Stgy 1.4.1. Continue to incorporate leadership skills as part of courses where appropriate
- Stgy 1.4.2. Coordinate leadership development activities for students with other campus leadership initiatives.
- Goal 1.5 DPT graduates will participate and assume leadership roles in local, state and national professional organizations.
- Stgy 1.5.1. Faculty will act as role models in their participation in the activities of their professional organizations and in service to their professional organizations.
- Goal 1.6 DPT graduates will effectively incorporate research into practice.
- Stgy 1.6.1. Continue the critical evaluation of research studies in a number of courses.
- Stgy 1.6.2. Increase the course activities that stimulate the students to question existing theory and practice.
- Stgy 1.6.3. Stimulate the ability to develop research questions and an interest in conducting clinical research.
- Stgy 1.6.4. Continue involvement of students in faculty research as part of the research requirement for graduation
- Stgy 1.6.5. Work to procure the facilities to perform research in a safe and effective manner
- Stgy 1.6.6. Continue the emphasis on evidence-based practice in discussions and laboratory sessions.
- Goal 1.7 DPT graduates will be involved in continued professional development by participation through formal continuing education and other forms of lifelong learning.
- Stgy 1.7.1. Faculty will act as role models by conducting and participating in continuing education activities.
- Goal 1.8 Effective use of educational technology by faculty in courses
- Stgy 1.8.1. Continue the development of technology as a critical element in course delivery where appropriate to facilitate student learning
- Stgy 1.8.2. Develop audiovisual materials to support teaching activities.
- Goal 1.9 DPT Graduates will be competent in using technology for lifelong learning and clinical practice
- Stgy 1.9.1. Faculty will include in courses, where appropriate, activities that will require students to effectively use technology
- Goal 1.10 Faculty will complete the development of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree (DPT) Program in collaboration with Medical College of Georgia and North Georgia College and State University
- Stgy 1.10.1. Faculty will develop courses for the second and third years of the DPT Program and continue to improve these courses once developed
- Stgy 1.10.2. Faculty will continue to improve courses for the first year of the DPT Program
- Stgy 1.10.3. Faculty will work with MCG & NGCSU faculty to develop shared courses and course material
- Goal 1.11 Each faculty member will have an effective faculty development plan that will improve clinical and didactic teaching skills
- Stgy 1.11.1. Faculty will annually identify needs for personal development as part of IFM and will develop a plan to address those development needs
- Stgy 1.11.2. Develop exchanges with other faculty in the College of Health Professions and the University about teaching approaches
- Stgy 1.11.3 Faculty will incorporate departmental needs as appropriate into their IFMs
- Goal 1.12 Department will support faculty member's development plans to improve clinical and didactic teaching skills
- Stgy 1.12.1. The Department Head will annually identify resources that can be used in promoting faculty development
- Stgy 1.12.2. Faculty annually will identify departmental needs for departmental faculty development and prioritize those needs.
- Stgy 1.12.3. A system for evaluation of the effectiveness of the use of faculty development resources will be developed
- Stgy 1.12.4. Promote the use of Consortium resources to promote faculty development
- Goal 1.13 Department will continue to ensure the ability of the Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation Science to meet the needs of students seeking graduate study in the rehabilitation professions.
- Stgy 1.13.1. The faculty will annually review the curriculum of the BS in Rehabilitation Sciences degree program to ensure that it is meeting the needs of those students entering the DPT Program at AASU.
- Stgy 1.13.2. Requirements of DPT, MOT/OTD and Masters of Sports Medicine programs will be reviewed at least once during this planning period to update requirements of the BS in Rehabilitation Sciences curriculum if necessary
- Goal 1.14 Department will continue to review actions by the DPT Consortium, Medical College of Georgia and University System of Georgia central office ensure the appropriateness of these actions in supporting the quality of education received by the DPT students resident at AASU
- Stgy 1.14.1. The faculty will regularly review the actions of the Oversight and other committees of the DPT Consortium
- Stgy 1.14.2. The Department Head will review and respond to the actions of the Medical College of Georgia and University System of Georgia central office regarding the DPT Consortium
Core Value 2 - Faculty participate in scholarly activities as a foundation for advancing improvements in clinical practice, the advancement of professional knowledge and the improvement of instruction and learning.
- Goal 2.1 The Department will strengthen scholarly activity that will support the scholarship of teaching and learning and evidence based physical therapy clinical practice
- Stgy 2.1.1. Develop collaborative research activities among the Physical Therapy faculty
- Stgy 2.1.2. Explore coordinated research activities with clinicians at area health care facilities for both faculty and student research projects.
- Stgy 2.1.4 Develop other scholarly activities that promote the scholarship of teaching, service, and practice
- Stgy 2.1.5 Identify and work to procure the facilities and equipment needed to perform research in a safe and effective manner
- Goal 2.2 The Department will support faculty participation in clinical practice for the improvement of instruction and student learning.
- Stgy 2.2.1. Continue to explore the development of a faculty practice clinic
- Stgy 2.2.2. Participate in community-based practice activities
- Goal 2.3 Faculty will contribute to evidence based practice and incorporation of best evidence into all courses
- Stgy 2.3.1. Develop research activities among the Physical Therapy faculty that reflect areas of teaching
- Stgy 2.3.2. Course preparation includes the incorporation of research evidence and other measures of best practice into class discussions/presentations
- Goal 2.4 The Department will promote interdisciplinary collaboration in research and scholarship
- Stgy 2.4.1. Develop collaborative research activities with faculty in different departments and colleges.
- Goal 2.5 Each faculty member will have an effective faculty development plan that will improve research or other scholarly activities
- Stgy 2.5.1. Faculty will annually identify scholarly activities (such as presentations, publications, grants, research or other scholarly activities) as part of IFM and will have a plan for development of a personal program for scholarship
- Stgy 2.5.2. Incorporation of activities to develop scholarship in individual faculty development plan.
Core Value 3 -The faculty value commitment and responsiveness to community and professional service.
- Goal 3.1 The Department will enhance the continued professional development of physical therapy practitioners in the areas of patient care and clinical research.
- Stgy 3.1.1. Develop continuing education offerings for alumni and community participants
- Stgy 3.1.2. Explore coordinated research activities with clinicians at area health care facilities for both faculty and student research projects.
- Stgy 3.1.3. Continue the interdisciplinary journal club for students, faculty and community participants.
- Goal 3.2 The Department will support faculty in activities to benefit the greater community.
- Stgy 3.2.1. Continue faculty involvement in community activities and community organizations associated with the treatment and prevention of disease.
- Stgy 3.2.2. Conduct employer and clinician focus groups to gain a better understanding of the health care community needs.
- Stgy 3.3.3 Continue to support student involvement in community activities and projects through classroom activities and student groups
- Goal 3.3 The Department will support professional organizations related to physical therapy and physical therapy education.
- Stgy 3.3.1. Promote faculty. student and alumni involvement in professional organizations.
- Stgy 3.3.2. Develop funding mechanisms for faculty and student involvement in professional organizations.
- Stgy 3.3.3. Establish a formal alumni association.
- Stgy 3.3.4. Continue supporting pre-physical therapy club, Rho Tau.
- Goal 3.4 The Department will work to increase the number, quality and diversity of applicants to the DPT and Bachelor of Rehabilitation Science programs
- Stgy 3.4.1. Promptly mail out materials when requested
- Stgy 3.4.2. Review mailings and department promotional materials regularly and revise when needed
- Stgy 3.4.3. Review the website for content and effectiveness
- Stgy 3.4.4. Do presentations at undergraduate institutions that could send students to AASU
- Stgy 3.4.5. Attend/send materials to graduate recruitment fairs at major universities and colleges in Georgia and the southeast that may send students to the AASU physical therapy program.
- Stgy 3.4.6. Participate in graduate and undergraduate recruitment activities of the University
- Stgy 3.4.7. Advise pre-physical therapy and undeclared students about careers in physical therapy and the other healthcare disciplines
- Stgy 3.4.8. Work with institutional research and the recruitment office to develop a plan to assess the effectiveness of recruitment activities and incorporate these into a periodic assessment of effectiveness
- Goal 3.5 Faculty will collaborate with North Georgia College and State University and Medical College of Georgia to implement a transition doctor of physical therapy program (T-DPT)
- Stgy 3.5.1. Develop a curricular plan for the T-DPT
- Stgy 3.5.2. Supervise enrollment of 2006 & 2007 students into T-DPT
- Stgy 3.5.3. Revise curriculum for involvement of alumni beyond the initial two cohorts and other therapists in a T-DPT program
