Core Value 1-The faculty of the Department of Nursing are dedicated to providing excellence in nursing education.
- Goal 1.1 The Department of Nursing will provide the highest quality education possible to our students and stimulate the critical thinking skills necessary for nursing practice and leadership.
- Stgy 1.1.1 The Department of Nursing will strive to attain and maintain 100% NCLEX pass rates within 6 months of graduation.
- Stgy 1.1.2. The faculty will achieve teaching through the development of therapeutic relationships between and among faculty and students.
- Stgy 1.1.3. Faculty will incorporate multiple teaching styles in recognition of students having different learning styles, in order to create effective classroom and clinical instruction which appeals to more than one sense.
- Stgy 1.1.4. The Department will continue to use thematic analyses from 2005 Nursing Focus Groups to improve instructional performance.
- Stgy 1.1.5. Course coordinators and faculty will continually update course content, teaching materials, and audiovisual materials in order to deliver the most up to date knowledge.
- Goal 1.2 The Department of Nursing will actively promote excellence among its faculty
- Stgy 1.2.1 The Department of Nursing will seek to be recognized as a Center of Excellence in nursing education in the Southeastern United States.
- Stgy 1.2.2. Establish the Department as a School or College of Nursing
- Stgy 1.2.3. Faculty in the Department of Nursing will be recognized for accomplished performance in teaching, service and scholarship.
- Stgy 1.2.4. Create a strategic difference in faculty responsibilities and expectations with regard to rank and tenure review and level
Stgy 1.2.4.1. Develop systematic process to enhance faculty retention.
- Stgy 1.2.4.2. Plan and implement tenure and clinical tracks for faculty with clearly defined expectations and responsibilities.
- Stgy 1.2.5. The Department of Nursing will develop a process of Continuous Quality of Improvement as an integral part of the Departmental evaluation plan for the purpose of maintaining excellence in programs of instruction.
- Stgy 1.2.5.1 Conduct regularly scheduled in depth analyses of multiple sources of data, including evaluation of curriculum, NET scores, ATI scores, and NCLEX pass rates.
- Stgy 1.2.5.2 Develop and implement a plan which will promote and ensure consistency of expectations for students in the multiple levels of nursing programs.
- Stgy1.2.5.3. Utilize effective teaching strategies in the classroom and clinical settings.
- Stgy 1.2.6. Faculty of the Department of Nursing will engage in ongoing professional development.
- Stgy 1.2.6.1. Faculty will maintain currency in clinical skills through individual faculty practice.
- Stgy 1.2.6.2. Faculty will attend and participate in professional nursing conferences to provide faculty with new teaching/learning strategies to be more successful in teaching effectively.
- Stgy 1.2.6.3. Newly hired faculty will be successfully mentored in the faculty role through a comprehensive departmental plan.
- Stgy 1.2.7. Expand admission, progression and graduation numbers of pre-licensure baccalaureate nursing program through a collaborative funding partnership with Memorial Health University Medical Center.
- Stgy 1.2.7.1. In academic year 2007-08, increase admission numbers to 72 students in Spring admission cycle.
- Stgy 1.2.7.2. In academic year 2008-09, increase number of admitted students to 96 in Spring and Summer admission cycles.
- Stgy 1.2.8. Expand enrollment in the graduate nursing program through development of new tracks and programs, increased recruiting strategies, and on-line course development.
- Stgy 1.2.8.1. Enroll students in the Clinical Nurse Leader track.
- Stgy 1.2.8.2.Explore development of the Certificate in Teaching Education track.
- Stgy 1.2.8.3. Identify possible collaborative partnerships with doctoral degree granting institutions to offer PhD/DNP for nursing faculty and/or students.
- Stgy 1.2.8.4. Increase the on-line presence of the programs and tracks in the Graduate Program in Nursing.
- Goal 1.3. The Department of Nursing will provide adequate resources and facilities to promote excellence in teaching.
- Stgy 1.3.1. Sponsor one teaching-learning event per year as a means of providing continuing education and ongoing development for faculty members.
- Stgy 1.3.2. Reward and retain faculty in the Department of Nursing.
- Stgy 1.3.3. Develop policies and procedures for recognition of clinical and tenure faculty tracks.
- Stgy 1.3.4. The Department will engage in ongoing development and expansion of clinical resources and sites for all levels of nursing students.
- Stgy 1.3.5. The Department of Nursing will explore resources and mechanisms to reward nursing preceptors.
- Stgy 1.3.6. Utilize available resources to protect the integrity of the curricula and courses.
- Stgy 1.3.7. Develop physical resources to provide more opportunity for remediation and support of students.
- Goal 1.4. The Department of Nursing will continue to study and be responsive to professional nursing workforce issues.
- Stgy 1.4.1. Explore development or assignment of faculty liason position to meet regularly with clinical agencies during, and at the completion of, semester clinical experiences.
- Stgy 1.4.2. Develop and implement a needs survey to assess current and ongoing education needs of registered nurses in Southeast Georgia and the coastal regions.
- Goal 1.5 The Department of Nursing faculty and students will effectively use technology for productivity, scholarship, communication and development.
- Stgy 1.5.1. Assess technology needs for effective delivery of nursing curricula.
- Stgy 1.5.1.1. Incoprorate synchronous and asynchronous technology to increase on-line offerings in post-baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs.
- Stgy 1.5.1.2. Seek additional funding for improvement and upgrade of Ashmore classrooms to include smart technology.
- Stgy 1.5.1.3 Seek repair and upgrade of Ashmore Auditorium to ensure minimal comfort, and to maximize learning effectiveness.
- Stgy 1.5.1.4. Utilize personal digital assistant technology in undergraduate and graduate curricula.
- Stgy 1.5.1.5. Seek additional funding for purchase and acquisition of human simulators to enhance student learning experiences.
- Stgy 1.5.1.6. Seek and procure additional funding to support laboratory and other departmental technology needs to enhance student learning experiences.
- Stgy 1.5.1.7. Utilize strategic technology plan to provide regular updates to laboratory and departmental instructional computers.
- Stgy 1.5.2. Maintain an appropriate level of updated software and teaching materials.
- Goal 1.6 Faculty and students in the Department of Nursing will have international educational opportunities.
- Stgy 1.6.1. Invest appropriate resources in establishing relationships with a foreign "sister" school to enhance opportunities for international education and exchange for nursing students and faculty
Core Value 2- Faculty participate in scholarly activities as a foundation for advancing improvements in clinical practice, the advancement of professional knowledge and the improvement of instruction and learning.
- Goal 2.1 The Department of Nursing will foster an environment that promotes scholarly activity.
- Stgy 2.1.1. In response to Individual Faculty Missions, reduce teaching load for 1-2 faculty per semester to foster scholarship activities which contribute to the departmental mission and strategic plan.
- Stgy 2.1.2. The department will support scholarly activities in order to have annual publications by faculty.
- Stgy 2.1.3. Seek and develop more collaborative external partnerships for research and other scholarly activities.
- Stgy 2.1.4. The department will develop resources and infrastructure to support faculty efforts for grants, publications, and presentations.
- Stgy 2.1.5. Develop nursing research teams to accomplish specific research goals.
- Stgy 2.1.6. Explore opportunities to establish collaborative partnerships with other departments in the College of Health Professions.
- Goal 2.2 The Department of Nursing will promote integration of scholarship into educational activities.
- Stgy 2.2.1. Involve graduate students with faculty research projects/studies.
- Stgy 2.2.2. Increase knowledge base of faculty with regard to evidence based practice in order to develop teaching/learning activities in all program levels.
- Goal 2.3 The Department of Nursing will actively pursue the acquisition of resources to support scholarly activity.
- Stgy 2.3.1. Facilitate the development of a nursing research room with faculty resources for research development and collaboration.
- Stgy 2.3.2. Procure laptop computer with qualitative and quantitative software for faculty to check out as they are engaged in research data analysis.
Core Value 3-The Department of Nursing faculty value commitment and responsiveness to community and professional service.
- Goal 3.1. Maintain a strong and collaborative culture within the organizational atmosphere and experience for faculty within the Department of Nursing.
- Stgy 3.1.1. Vitalize collegial relationships among faculty, staff and students, and alumni of the Department of Nursing.
- Stgy 3.1.2. Continue to schedule regular opportunities for faculty-student exchange and discussion, such as brown-bag lunches and presentations.
- Stgy 3.1.3. Promote identification and recognition, internally to the university and externally in the community, of the nursing faculty as an effective collegial team.
- Stgy 3.1.4. Continue to develop means of alumni recognition.
- Goal 3.2. The Department of Nursing will promote and reward service activities.
- Stgy 3.2.1. Disseminate information to faculty about service opportunities as they are available.
- Goal 3.3. The Department of Nursing will increase awareness of professional nursing careers.
- Stgy 3.3.1. Coordinate the nursing marketing plan with other AASU recruiting activities and personnel.
- Stgy 3.3.2. Develop marketing approach to associate degree program graduates.
- Goal 3.4. The Department of Nursing will develop and maintain partnerships within the community and health care agencies to promote service opportunities.
- Stgy 3.4.1. Offer expertise through participation in health care system councils, including research, education and practice
- Stgy 3.4.2. Utilize Community Nursing Advisory Council to promote and strengthen partnerships between the AASU Department of Nursing, and clinical agencies.
