Core Values/Goals/Strategies
2007-2012

  • Core Value 1 -The faculty are dedicated to providing excellence in Health Professions education.
    • Goal 1.1 The faculty will provide the highest quality education possible to dental hygiene students and stimulate critical thinking skills necessary for practice and leadership in the discipline.
      • Stgy: 1.1. Investigate, select, and utilize the most effective teaching methodologies to enhance critical thinking in clinical practice and professional leadership.
      • Stgy: 1.1.2 Implement changes and/or improvements based on assessment of student performance and external evaluations.
      • Stgy: 1.1.3 Continue department remediation activities based on student performance.
      • Stgy: 1.1.4 Educate and graduate competent dental hygienists from the on-campus and external sites
    • Goal 1.2 The department will actively promote excellence among its faculty.
      • Stgy: 1.2.1 Enhance faculty teaching and calibration by providing and/or attending departmental/interdisciplinary in-services and faculty development sessions.
      • Stgy: 1.2.2 Encourage faculty participation in clinical practice.
      • Stgy: 1.2.3 Increase one's knowledge of the subject matter through continuing education, and/or course study.
    • Goal 1.3 The department will strive to provide adequate resources and facilities to promote excellence in teaching.
      • Stgy: 1.3.1 Investigate new texts and other resources for utilization in the classroom, clinic, and laboratory.
      • Stgy: 1.3.2 Involve area dentists in the program through faculty teaching and clinical positions, guest lecturing, dental office externships, and participation in Annual Student Research Presentations.
      • Stgy: 1.3.3 Investigate resources for developing a state of the art dental hygiene
        clinical facility.
    • Goal 1.4 The department will continue to study and be responsive to professional workforce issues.
      • Stgy: 1.4.1 Conduct employment and other surveys of the Southeastern District dental community to assess employment needs and workforce issues. Assist with employment needs of dental professionals.
    • Goal 1.5 Faculty and students will effectively use technology for productivity, scholarship, communication and development.
      • Stgy: 1.5.1 Continue delivery of the various didactic courses to off campus sites via distance learning methods.
      • Stgy: 1.5.2 Increase and/or maintain the number of web enhanced courses. Regularly update existing web/web enhanced courses.
      • Stgy: 1.5.3 Increase the development of instructional technology for classroom and laboratory intervention.
      • Stgy: 1.5.4 Utilize a variety of appropriate technologies to enhance baccalaureate level courses to facilitate the teaching and learning process and provide wider access.
    • Goal 1.6 Departmental students and faculty will have the opportunity to participate in international education opportunities.
      • Stgy: 1.6.1 Investigate international educational, cultural, and service opportunities/projects.
      • Stgy: 1.6.2 Provide student educational opportunities for the provision of dental hygiene clinical services to international and ethnic groups.
  • Core Value 2 - Faculty participate in scholarly activities as a foundation for advancing improvements in clinical practice, the advancement of professional knowledge and the improvement of instruction and learning.
    • Goal 2.1 The department will foster an environment which promotes scholarly activity.
      • Stgy: 2.1. Encourage faculty to add to the body of knowledge in the profession of dental hygiene through research, scholarship, publications, scholarly presentations, and clinical practice via traditional, collaborative, interdisciplinary and/or innovative approaches.
      • Stgy: 2.1.2 Encourage faculty membership and participation in professional organizations.
    • Goal 2.2 The department will promote the integration of scholarship into educational activities.
      • Stgy: 2.2.1 Critically analyze current and historical research in the field for utilization in the classroom, clinic, and laboratory. Encourage networking with other dental/dental hygiene professionals and faculty.
    • Goal 2.3 The department will actively pursue the acquisition of resources to support scholarly activity.
      • Stgy: 2.3.1 Investigate innovative strategies in pursuit of scholarship.
  • Core Value 3 -The faculty value commitment and responsiveness to community and professional service.
    • Goal 3.1 The department will promote and reward service activities.
      • Stgy: 3.1.1 Continue to promote the on-campus clinical dental hygiene services.
      • Stgy: 3.1.2 Investigate new and/or maintain existing outreach and service activities to a variety of cultural and socioeconomic groups.
    • Goal 3.2 The department will increase awareness of the dental hygiene professional careers.
      • Stgy: 3.2.1 Continue to recruit qualified applicants by the use of departmental website, recruitment video, and revised/reformatted application packet.
      • Stgy: 3.2.2 Continue participation in on-campus and external recruitment activities.
      • Stgy: 3.2.3 Participate in and continue comprehensive advisement for un-declared, declared, and pre- dental hygiene, and dental hygiene majors to enhance student success.
      • Stgy: 3.2.4 Annually, provide continuing education opportunities for dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants in the Southeastern Dental District of Georgia.
      • Stgy: 3.2.5 Increase community awareness of AASU and the Department of Dental Hygiene by promoting and offering student research presentations during the Annual departmental Open House.
    • Goal 3.3 The department will develop and maintain partnerships within the community and the health professions to promote service opportunities.
      • Stgy: 3.3.1 Continue liaison with the Southeastern District Dental and Dental Hygiene community (i.e Advisory Committee, etc.)
      • Stgy: 3.3.2 Provide patient services in both the on-campus and external clinical sites and to special groups including but not limited to J.C. Health Clinic, Latino Outreach, and other underserved populations utilizing collaborative efforts.
      • Stgy: 3.3.3 Continue to provide comprehensive oral health education in the on-campus, external clinical sites, and the community.
