Core Values/Goals/Strategies
2007-2012

  • Core Value 1 - The CSDS faculty are dedicated to educational excellence in the field of communication sciences and disorders.
    • Goal 1.1 CSDS faculty will provide the highest quality education possible to our students and stimulate the critical thinking skills necessary for practice and leadership in the health professions.
      • Stgy 1.1.1 The CSDS department head will promote interdisciplinary teaching wherever possible and use the Interdisciplinary Committee as a venue for communication and discussion.
      • Stgy 1.1.2 Whenever possible, the department head will provide incentives for innovation in teaching methods as part of the faculty evaluation process.
      • Stgy 1.1.3 The CSDS faculty will promote leadership concepts within the curriculum.
      • Stgy 1.1.4 The CSDS faculty will conduct an on-going evaluation of curriculum to meet the standards for accreditation as set forth by the CAA of the ASHA while seeking opportunities for the enhancement and encouragement of critical thinking skills in its students.
      • Stgy 1.1.5 CSDS faculty will begin the development of the requirements for an exit portfolio that demonstrates student competency relative to the KASA.
      • Stgy1.1.6. The department head will explore membership in the Council of Accredited Programs in Communication Sciences & Disorders.
    • Goal 1.2 CSDS will actively promote excellence among its faculty.
      • Stgy 1.2.1 The department head will monitor faculty workloads and do an annual assessment of workloads in an effort to maximize faculty effectiveness.
      • Stgy 1.2.2 The CSDS faculty will use recruitment strategies that attract a high quality and diverse applicant pool of faculty members for department.
      • Stgy 1.2.3 The CSDS department will develop a faculty mentoring system the enables new faculty to benefit from the teaching experience of more established faculty.
      • Stgy 1.2.4 The department head will disseminate information about faculty development and/or leadership opportunities as these become available and seek resources to make such opportunities available to faculty.
      • Stgy 1.2.5 The department head will respond to university award opportunities to recognize faculty excellence.
      • Stgy 1.2.6 The department head will establish guidelines for faculty practice, to assist in keeping faculty clinical skills current.
      • Stgy. 1.2.7 The CSDS faculty will attend workshops in presentations as required By the American Speech-Language- Hearing Association to keep professional credentials current.
    • Goal 1.3. CSDS will provide adequate resources and facilities to promote excellence in teaching.
      • Stgy 1.3.1 The CSDS faculty will place a high priority on classroom and laboratory equipment and technology when considering utilization of new resources.
      • Stgy 1.3.2 The CSDS department head will have ongoing dialog with the dean to seek improved resources for the department including, but not limited to, a new technologies for teaching.
      • Stgy 1.3.3 The CSDS department head in collaboration with the faculty will maintain open communication regarding sharing of space where appropriate.
      • Stgy 1.3.4 The CSDS department head will explore designation of "clinical faculty" status within the rank of full time faculty
    • Goal 1.4 CSDS faculty will participate in the clinical education of students enrolled in the program.
      • Stgy 1.4.1. CSDS faculty will continue to integrate clinical education opportunities throughout the academic course work.
      • Stgy 1.4.2 CSDS faculty will foster the development of independence, critical
        thinking and clinical problem solving.
      • Stgy 1.4.3. CSDS faculty will continue using the case based clinical problem
        solving approach in clinical education.
      • Stgy 1.4 4. CSDS faculty will continue the emphasis on the use of data in clinical decision making.
    • Goal 1.5 CSDS will study and be responsive to professional workforce issues in the discipline.
      • Stgy 1.5.1 The CSDS faculty will have ongoing dialog with local and regional health care and educational entities regarding communication sciences and disorders workforce needs and solutions to those needs.
      • Stgy 1.5.2 The department head will continue to interact with state and national organizations regarding workforce issues in communication sciences & disorders.
      • Stgy 1.5.3 The CSDS department will utilize advisory committees to assess effectiveness of curriculum as well as the adequacy of preparation of students.
      • Stgy 1.5.4 The CSDS faculty will consider opportunities to train future faculty.
    • Goal 1.6 The CSDS department will effectively use technology for productivity, scholarship, communication and development of quality education.
      • Stgy 1.6.1 The CSDS department will have a "Coordinator of Technology" who
        reports to the department head.
      • Stgy 1.6.2 The Coordinator of Technology will in consultation with the department's faculty set technology goals for the department.
      • Stgy 1.6.3 The CSDS Coordinator of Technology will through the COHP Director of Technology update the department's website on an annual basis.
      • Stgy 1.6.4 The department head will improve dissemination of committee reports, clinical site contracts and other important issues.
    • Goal 1.7 CSDS faculty will promote and encourage international educational opportunities.
      • Stgy 1.7.1 The CSDS department will promote opportunities in the area of communication science and disorders in underserved countries for students and faculty.
      • Stgy 1.7.2 The CSDS faculty will promote educational opportunities in international health care settings.
  • Core Value 2 - CSDS faculty participate in scholarly activities as a foundation for advancing improvements in clinical practice, the advancement of professional knowledge and the improvement of instruction and learning.
    • Goal 2.1 The CSDS department will foster an environment that promotes scholarly activity.
      • Stgy 2.1.1 The department head and CSDS Faculty will use the Individual Faculty Mission (IFM) to balance scholarship activities with teaching and research as appropriate for AASU.
      • Stgy 2.1.2 CSDS faculty will develop collaborative research activities among Communication disorders faculty and with faculty in different departments and colleges.
      • Stgy 2.1.3 The department head will disseminate information about scholarship opportunities to faculty and students as appropriate.
      • Stgy 2.1.4 The department will establish a Scholarship Committee to develop the scholarship mission of the department.
      • Stgy 2.1.5 The Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders faculty will seek to bring distinguished speakers in the discipline to the campus.
    • Goal 2.2 CSDS will promote integration of scholarship into educational activities.
      • Stgy 2.2.1 The CSDS faculty will continue to promote, within the curriculum, the concept that all students become good consumers of research.
      • Stgy 2.2.2 The CSDS faculty will develop a forum for presentation of its students' scholarly work.
      • Stgy 2.2.3. CSDS faculty will work with the AASU Chapter of NSSLHA to develop fundraising activities to support student travel.
      • Stgy 2.2.4. CSDS faculty will explore coordinated research activities with clinicians in practicum facilities for both faculty and student research projects.
    • Goal 2.3 CSDS will actively pursue the acquisition of resources to support scholarly activity.
      • Stgy 2.3.1 A policy will be developed that addresses workload adjustments for faulty who secure extramural funding for scholarship activities.
      • Stgy 2.3.2 A policy will be developed to return indirect costs from extramural funding to the department.
      • Stgy 2.3.3 Ongoing dialog with healthcare providers will include discussion of opportunities for scholarship collaboration.
      • Stgy 2.3.4 The department head will work with the office of Sponsored Programs to monitor grant opportunities
  • Core Value 3 - CSDS faculty value commitment and responsiveness to community and professional service.
    • Goal 3.1 CSDS will promote and reward service activities.
      • Stgy 3.1.1 The department head in consultation with the dean and faculty will develop a statement of service expectations of its faculty.
      • Stgy 3.1.2 Each CSDS faculty member will develop a profile of service interests.
      • Stgy 3.1.3 CSDS Faculty service will be balanced with teaching and scholarship through the IFM process.
    • Goal 3.2 CSDS faculty will support activities to benefit the greater community.
      • Stgy 3.2.1. CSDS faculty will participate in involvement in community activities such as the Stroke Project and community organizations associated with the treatment and prevention of communication disorders.
      • Stgy 3.2.2. CSDS faculty will coordinate focus groups to gain a better understanding of community needs in the area of communication disorders.
      • Stgy 3.2.3 CSDS faculty will continue to provide clinical supervision to the RiteCare Center for Communication Disorders in an effort to provide services to the Greater Savannah/Chatham community in need.
    • Goal 3.3 CSDS will increase awareness of the department and career options in communication sciences and disorders.
      • Stgy 3.3.1 The Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders will develop a marketing plan.
      • Stgy 3.3.2 CSDS faculty will participate whenever possible in career events to promote the department and discipline.
      • Stgy. 3.3.3 Through the Coordinator of Technology, the CSDS faculty will maintain an ongoing review of its website and update it annually.
      • Stgy3.3.4 The CSDS department will maintain a job listings notebook for students in the department seeking employment upon graduation.
    • Goal 3.4 CSDS will develop and maintain partnerships within the community and its profession to promote service opportunities.
      • Stgy 3.4.1 The department head will assess Continuing Education needs of the department faculty and seek appropriate ways to respond to those needs.
      • Stgy 3.4.2 The department head and faculty of CSDS, as appropriate, will respond to opportunities to serve on local, state and/or national committees/boards within their disciplines.
      • Stgy 3.4.3 The department head will dialog with local systems regarding the role the department can play as a service partner for the community.
      • Stgy 3.4.4. CSDS faculty will participate in and encourage student participation in the American Speech-Language Hearing Association, National Student Speech-Language Hearing Association and Georgia Speech and Hearing Association
      • Stgy 3.4.5. CSDS faculty will promote faculty, student and alumni involvement in service related organizations.
      • Stgy 3.4.6. CSDS faculty will establish a database of program alumni to monitor future needs and trends in the profession.
